Most practice drills are designed around feel. Hit to a target. Work on your tempo. Groove a swing thought. They’re fine — but they have no built-in measurement system. You do the drill, you feel better, and you have no idea if anything actually improved.
These five drills are different. Each one requires a launch monitor, produces measurable data, and gives you a concrete number to track week over week. Do them consistently for a month and you’ll have hard evidence of where your game is heading.
Drill 1: The Dispersion Box
What you need: Launch monitor, any iron
The drill: Hit 20 shots with your 7-iron at a specific target. Record the carry distance and offline distance for each shot. Calculate the width and depth of your dispersion “box” — the rectangle that contains all 20 shots.
Track this number: Total box area (width × depth in yards). Example: if your shots spread 18 yards wide and 22 yards deep, your box is 396 square yards.
Goal: Shrink the box by 10% each month. A tighter box means more predictable shots, which means better course management and lower scores.
Drill 2: The Speed Consistency Test
What you need: Launch monitor, driver
The drill: Hit 10 drivers at what feels like 80% effort. Record the club head speed for each shot. Calculate the standard deviation — how much your speed varies shot to shot.
Track this number: Standard deviation of club head speed. A good target is under 2 mph variation. If you’re swinging at 95, 91, 97, 89, 94 — that’s inconsistency that shows up in distance scatter.
Goal: Get your speed standard deviation under 2 mph. Consistent speed means consistent distance means confident club selection.
Drill 3: The Gapping Audit
What you need: Launch monitor, full bag
The drill: Hit 10 shots with every club in your bag. Record the average carry for each. List them in order and calculate the gap between consecutive clubs.
Track this number: Gap consistency. Ideally, you want 10-15 yard gaps between each club, with no gaps larger than 20 yards. Gaps larger than 20 yards mean you have a distance “dead zone” with no club to cover it.
Goal: Identify and fill any gaps over 20 yards — through adding a club, changing a shaft, or adjusting your swing with a specific club.
Drill 4: The Spin Control Ladder
What you need: Launch monitor, pitching wedge or sand wedge
The drill: Hit 5 shots at each of three distances: 50 yards, 75 yards, and 100 yards. Record the spin rate for each shot. Calculate the average spin at each distance.
Track this number: Spin rate at each distance. You should see spin increase as distance decreases (shorter swing = more loft = more spin). If your 50-yard shot has less spin than your 100-yard shot, your technique needs adjustment.
Goal: Build a predictable spin ladder where you know exactly how much check you’ll get at each distance.
Drill 5: The Launch Window Test
What you need: Launch monitor, driver
The drill: Hit 15 drivers and record launch angle and spin rate for each. Plot them on a simple chart with launch angle on one axis and spin on the other. Look for where your shots cluster.
Track this number: How many shots fall inside the “optimal window” for your swing speed. For 90-100 mph, the window is roughly 12-15° launch with 2,200-2,800 rpm spin.
Goal: Get 80%+ of your drives inside the optimal window. Shots outside the window are costing you distance and accuracy.
Track Everything
Do these drills once a week. Log the numbers. Review them monthly. The trends tell you everything — what’s working, what’s not, and where to focus next.
