Iron Lofts Are Getting Stronger: Why That Destroys Your Gapping
Modern game improvement irons have 7-irons lofted at 26-28 degrees. Traditional players irons sit at 33-35. That gap is silently wrecking the gapping in millions of bags right now.
The golf industry has been quietly making irons stronger for thirty years and almost nobody talks about what that does to the rest of your bag. A 7-iron from 1995 was 36 degrees. A modern game improvement 7-iron is often 26-28 degrees. That is 8-10 degrees of loft difference in a club that carries the same number on the sole.
The result is a generation of golfers who think their 7-iron goes 175 yards and have no idea that it is actually a 5-iron in traditional terms. More importantly, they have no idea what is happening to their gapping between the 7-iron and the wedges, which is where the real scoring damage occurs.

If your GI pitching wedge is 40 degrees and your gap wedge is 50 degrees, you have a 10-degree jump between those two clubs. At 100 mph ball speed that gap represents 20-25 yards of carry with no club to fill it. That is a scoring gap on every par 4 approach from 100-125 yards.
Why Manufacturers Do This
Stronger lofts produce more distance. More distance sells clubs. A golfer who hits a 7-iron 165 yards with their old set and then hits 175 with a new set feels like the new clubs are better. The distance gain is real. What they are not told is that the distance gain comes entirely from the loft change, not from technology, and that the gapping in their new set is now compressed in the long irons and gapped at the wedges.
The Gapping Fix
Audit Your Lofts First
Before buying wedges, measure the actual loft of your pitching wedge with a loft gauge or ask your fitter to check it. This one number determines what wedge setup you need. A 40-degree PW needs completely different wedge spacing than a 46-degree PW.
Build Your Wedge Set From the PW Back
The T5 approach to gapping starts from the pitching wedge and works back toward the bag. If your PW is 40 degrees, you need gap coverage from 40 to 60 degrees across three or four wedges. That typically means a 46-47 degree gap wedge, a 52 degree sand wedge, and a 58-60 degree lob. Standard off-the-shelf wedge sets built around a 46 degree PW will leave you with duplicated coverage in the wrong range.
Verify With Ball Speed Not Club Number
The T5 gapping method uses ball speed as the primary variable, not club number. Every 5 mph of ball speed should correspond to roughly one club of distance separation. If your 8-iron and 9-iron produce the same ball speed they are gapped incorrectly regardless of what number is on the sole. Track ball speed for every iron in a single session and you will know immediately where your gapping has holes.
The Bottom Line
Strong lofted irons are not bad. They produce real distance gains and that benefits most golfers. The problem is buying them without understanding what they do to the back of your bag. Know your pitching wedge loft. Build your wedge set from there. Use ball speed to verify your gaps are real. That process catches the issues that manufacturers have no incentive to tell you about.
