This means the numbers on the club are somewhat arbitrary. Don’t compare distances between brands by iron number. Compare by loft. Tracking too little means no data. Tracking too much means noise. Here is the T5 framework for how often to log sessions, what to track each time, and when the data actually starts meaning something.

Most golfers who start tracking data fall into one of two traps. They either track obsessively and drown in meaningless session-to-session variation, or they track once every few months and never build enough data to see real patterns. Neither works.

The T5 approach is structured around a simple principle: you need enough data to see trends, not so much data that noise drowns signal. Here is what that looks like in practice.

What to Track Every Session

Driver Sessions

Club head speed, ball speed, carry distance, spin rate, and side distance. That is five numbers and they take 30 seconds to log after a session. Side distance over time tells you whether your dispersion pattern is improving. Spin rate tells you whether your launch conditions are consistent. Carry tells you whether efficiency is improving.

Iron Sessions

Ball speed, carry distance, and side distance for each club you work on. The goal is to build your personal distance gapping chart over time. Generic charts tell you what a 7-iron should go. Your tracked data tells you what your 7-iron actually goes, on average, in real conditions.

What Not to Track Every Session

Peak height, total distance, and shot-by-shot carry variation are noise unless you are specifically trying to solve a problem related to one of them. They distract from the five core numbers and add mental overhead without adding actionable insight.

The Monthly Review

Once a month, pull up your last four to six sessions and compare averages. You are looking for three things. First, is average carry moving in the right direction? Second, is side dispersion width narrowing? Third, is spin rate getting closer to your target range for your swing speed?

If all three are moving in the right direction, whatever you are doing is working. If one is stuck or moving the wrong way, that is the variable to focus on next month. This review takes ten minutes and it is more valuable than any single practice session.

When to Track More Aggressively

After an equipment change. New driver, new shaft, adjusted hosel setting, different ball. Track five sessions before drawing any conclusions. One session is not enough to account for adjustment period variability.

During a swing change. If you are working with an instructor on a specific change, track every session and look at the data trend over the change period. Swing changes often produce worse short-term numbers before producing better long-term numbers. The data shows you whether the direction is right even when the short-term results are messy.

Baseline testing. At the start of each season, do a full baseline session. Driver and irons. Compare to previous season baseline. That year-over-year comparison is your most honest performance metric.
