Let’s be blunt. Most golfers practice wrong.
They show up to the range, buy a large bucket, and bang driver for 45 minutes. They hit a few wedges at the end, feel good about the one that landed close to the pin, and go home thinking they did something productive.

The Problem With “Feel” Based Practice
Feel lies. Every golfer knows this. The shot that “felt pure” went 15 yards left. The one you thought you chunked ended up pin-high.
Without objective data, you’re building your practice around feelings. And feelings change with your mood, the weather, what you ate for lunch, and whether you’re wearing your lucky socks.
Data doesn’t care about your socks. Data tells you that your 7-iron averages 6,400 rpm spin, carries 158 yards, and tends to miss right by 8 yards. That’s a baseline. Now you can work with it.
What Data-Driven Practice Actually Looks Like
Here’s a framework that works for golfers in the 85–115 mph swing speed range.
Step 1: Establish Your Baselines
Before you try to fix anything, you need to know where you are. Use a launch monitor to hit 10 shots with each club in your bag. Record the averages for carry distance, spin rate, launch angle, and ball speed.
Don’t cherry-pick. Don’t throw out the “bad ones.” Your average includes the mishits. That’s the point. Your scorecard doesn’t let you delete the bad shots, so your practice data shouldn’t either.
Step 2: Map Your Dispersion
Carry distance matters. But dispersion matters more.
If your 7-iron carries between 148 and 168 yards, you have a 20-yard spread. That’s not a “160-yard club.” That’s a “somewhere between 148 and 168” club. And that dispersion is costing you strokes.
Plot your shots on a dispersion chart. Look at where the misses go — long, short, left, right. The pattern tells you what to work on. A consistent miss is fixable. Random scatter means something more fundamental needs attention.
Step 3: Practice With Targets, Not Just Swings
Once you know your dispersion, set specific targets for your practice. Instead of “hit 50 balls with my 8-iron,” try “hit 20 balls with my 8-iron and track how many land within a 15-yard radius of my target.”
That’s a measurable session. You have a success rate. Next week, you do the same drill and compare. Are you improving? Staying flat? Getting worse? The data tells you — not your gut.
Step 4: Track Over Time
One session doesn’t tell you much. Ten sessions tell you everything.
Track your averages week over week. Look for trends. Maybe your driver spin is creeping up because your angle of attack is getting steeper. Maybe your wedge dispersion tightens when you slow your swing down by 5 mph.
These are insights you can only get from longitudinal data. And they’re the insights that actually lower scores.
