Breaking 90 means averaging bogey golf — one over par on every hole. Most players are closer than they think. The problem isn’t their swing. It’s that they’re practicing the wrong things and making the wrong decisions on the course.

The Math

18 bogeys = 90. You actually need just 2 pars and 16 bogeys. The goal isn’t hitting great shots — it’s eliminating blow-up holes. Triple bogeys and worse are the only thing standing between most golfers and breaking 90.

The 4 Killers

Fix these four things and you’ll break 90:

  • 3-putts — Practice lag putting from 30+ feet. Get it within 3 feet, every time.
  • OB tee shots — Hit 3-wood or hybrid on tight holes. Penalty strokes are score killers.
  • Short par 3s — Never be short. Never go in the water. Take one more club than you think you need.
  • Chipping yips — Use a bump-and-run. Take your most lofted wedge out of play around the green until you’re scoring consistently.

Track Your Game

You can’t fix what you can’t measure. Arccos Caddie Smart Sensors ($230) auto-detects every shot across all 14 clubs and builds your strokes gained stats after each round. After 5 rounds you’ll know exactly where you’re losing shots — and it’s almost never where you think.

Course Management

Use a rangefinder on every approach shot. The Blue Tees Series 3 Max ($199) gives you slope-adjusted yardages and flag lock. Know your real carry distance for each club. Aim away from trouble. Never attempt hero shots when bogey keeps you on track.

Practice Plan

80% of your improvement comes from 20% of practice. Prioritize in this order:

  1. Putting from 3–6 feet (make everything inside 6 feet)
  2. Bump-and-run chipping
  3. Lag putting from 25–40 feet
  4. Swing mechanics with the Lag Shot 7-Iron ($149)
  5. Driving range last — and only after the above

Weekly Practice Schedule

If you have 3 hours per week: 1 hour short game, 30 minutes putting, 30 minutes range, 1 hour on the course (9 holes).

FAQ

How long does it take to break 90? For most golfers who are currently shooting 95–100, implementing this plan takes 4–8 weeks to see consistent results. Tracking with Arccos will show your progress clearly.

Do I need lessons? One lesson with a teaching pro to fix the biggest mechanical issue in your swing is worth more than 20 range sessions. One lesson, focused on your specific miss, is the highest-ROI investment in your game.

What’s the single best thing I can do right now? Stop aiming at the flag on par 3s. Aim at the fat part of the green. This single change eliminates big numbers on the holes most golfers waste strokes on.
